Privacy & CASL Policy

Economic Development Online does not automatically collect personal and confidential information on the people who visit the Economic Development Online Website. Here’s how we handle the information we receive:

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

Every time you visit, we automatically store information on what Web browser you are using, what pages you are accessing, the date and time, and what site you came from. However, we don’t know who you are. This type of information is used to identify trends and plan upgrades to the Website. For example, if we notice a section of the site rarely gets visited, we may pull the material, or re-work it to make it more useful to visitors.

Personal Information

You may choose to provide us with personal information. For example, you may send us an e-mail that would identify you, or send personal details to an Economic Development Online staff member. Such communications are governed by the same policy as any other conversation; that is, they are considered private and confidential. We will not release any of your personal information unless you specifically tell us to do so.

PCI (Payment Card Industry) Compliance

Economic Development Online is a PCI level 1 compliant vendor, meaning that our services and products are secure, and follow the PCI guidelines. In addition, Economic Development Online goes through an annual certification to maintain this compliance, as well as self directed quarterly PCI scans of all systems. The PCI requires all merchants, vendors, or software providers to be PCI compliant if they’re handling card information (card number, expiration, etc.). The PCI program was established in 2004 as a way of creating a universally applicable set of standards for any business accepting, storing, transmitting or having access to credit card transaction information or sensitive documents. This includes everyone from small volume merchants to large payment processors. Prior to this point, credit card companies had created a variety of individual programs to address transaction security.

GeoTrust Security Certificates

When you connect to our secure web servers, you ask that server to authenticate itself. This authentication is quite a complex process involving public keys, private keys and a digital certificate. When a URL is secure, The GeoTrust Certificate Icon tells you that an independent third party has agreed that the server belongs to the company it claims to belong to. A valid certificate means that you can have confidence that you are sending information to/from the right place and you’ll know you’re doing business at a secure site when you see either an unbroken or a closed lock icon in your status bar. This encryption is performed using an industry-standard security protocol known as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). SSL is a feature included in all modern internet browsers. Information encrypted with SSL is nearly impossible for unauthorized parties to decode. All major internet stores use this technology, and it has been approved by VISA, MasterCard and American Express.

Host Security

It is understood that internet and network security threats are real and need to be dealt with; it is also understood that ISPs are common targets for malicious attacks. Here are some rules that Economic Development Online lives by:

The information stored must be protected from those who are not authorized to view it.

     Data Integrity
The information must be protected from being altered or deleted without the permission or knowledge of the owner.

The information must be available when the authorized user needs it.

The system must behave as expected. A radical change in the behavior of software due to upgrades, bug fixes can be disastrous.

A system administrator must make sure that there are not unauthorized users in the system. He should regulate access to the system.
